There are three main options when it comes to private aviation:
- Charter.
Charter flights on an as-needed basis. You pay per trip.
This is typically the highest cost per trip, but there are
no fixed costs. Best option for the occasional traveler
(less than 100 hours per year).
- Fractional.
Purchase a fractional share in a plane. You own a share
of a plane (usually sold in 1/8ths). You agree to pay for
a share of the fixed costs. You also pay an hourly fee to
use the plane. Typically costs $9,000 per month and up for
fixed costs plus $1,200 to $5,000 per hour. Hard to justify,
even for those who fly a lot.
- Sole Ownership.
You own the entire plane and are responsible for all fixed
costs. Fixed costs are high ($20,000 and up—often
way up) but the per-trip costs are lower than charter
or fractional. Best for those who travel a lot (400 hours
or more per year).
Santa Barbara Charter is a great option for
the occasional traveler or for those considering fractional
or sole ownership who want to first see how they like private
aviation.
